What is Support Coordination?

Support coordination funding may be included in your NDIS plan. Funds for support coordination are provided to pay for the services of a Support Coordinator to help you to:

  • understand and manage your NDIS plan and budgets,
  • find and engage the right services, supports, and community connections to achieve your goals,
  • navigate tricky intersects with other services systems that are not funded by the NDIS but relevant to your life and wellbeing,
  • coordinate referrals, assessments, and quotes,
  • manage problems that may arise around your plan, budgets, services and supports,
  • prepare for scheduled and unscheduled plan reviews,
  • build your knowledge, skills and ability to take greater control over your own plan, budgets, services and support,
  • get the most out of your funding so you get the most out of your life.

Support coordinators do this with you by:

  • listening to you about what you need and want,
  • learning from others who know you well (when appropriate),
  • thinking creatively and innovatively,
  • being knowledgeable about the NDIS,
  • having strong networks in community,
  • being person-centred and solutions-focused.

How do you choose the right Support Coordinator for you?

Every support coordinator has unique experiences, skills, knowledge, and qualifications, depending on their professional, educational, and personal background. This means that not all support coordinators will be equally well suited to you and your support needs.

To make the most of the (limited) time you have with your support coordinator, it is helpful to ask relevant questions before choosing your support coordinator. For example, you my like to ask about the support coordinators professional background, how long they have been a support coordinator, their current capacity and workload, their location and working hours, and if they engage in professional development actives to maintain their knowledge and skills.
