What is professional supervision?

Professional supervision assists you as a support worker to critically reflect on your work, problem solve, and develop the skills and knowledge to grow your professional competence, confidence, personal resilience and well-being.

Common areas of practice discussed during supervision include (but are not limited to):

  • well-being, stress management, and self care
  • effective communication
  • boundaries, conflict, and working relationships
  • working effectively with client goals
  • roles, responsibilities, and expectations
  • accountability and legislation
  • ethical dilemmas
  • professional development planning

How does professional supervision work?

Professional supervision takes a proactive approach to development and well-being. Unlike reactive supports like Counselling or an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), supervision aims to build and maintain your competence, confidence, and resilience so the quality of your work remains high, and the risks to you and those you support stay low. Support work in a high risk, high burnout occupation, so investing in yourself is essential to providing quality and safe support services.

When engaging in supervision it also helps to think about what you need and want to achieve from the supervision sessions i.e. your purpose, goals, and objectives.

Supervision is a safe and supportive environment. It can be facilitated either one-to-one or in small groups.

Is professional supervision confidential?

Professional supervision is a private and confidential space. There are limits however to privacy and confidentiality where serious concerns of harm to self or others exist, and where overriding legal or ethical issues arise.

When supervision is engaged for an employee by their employer, all parties will negotiate the terms and limits of privacy and confidentiality prior to commencement.

We record and store your supervision records in line with relevant legal and ethical requirements.

My Foundations works in accordance with the Australian Association of Social Work Supervision Standards. This framework focuses on education, support, and accountability.
